And finally, for 1916...

The "best" day of the year came earlier in the year - 18th January 1916 when only 119 fatalities were recorded.

But of course, as surely everyone knows by now, the worst day of the year was 1st July 1916, when 18,771 were killed, mostly in the opening day of the Somme offensive.

The worst place that year was always going to be the Somme - 67,059 fallen are recorded on the Theipval memorial for 1916 alone, in total 123,277 died in the Somme.  Out of 168,350 in France in total.

After Thiepval, the next most populated cemetery in 1916 is Basra - a notable reminder that the Western Front and Somme/Verdun were not the be all and end all of the war in 1916.  12,643 are remembered there from 1916.
