Notice about Layout

The internet is a volatile technical space and changed immensely since the blog started in 2014 and some browser/device combinations now disrupt the layout of this blog. The data sequence is Burial/Memorial Location, followed by the Names. There is a blank space placed after the last name for clarity - but this doesn't work reliably anymore. Special Post - Private Thomas Cartman

28170 Private Thomas Cartman of the 1st West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)  He died 14/5/1918.

Thomas was gassed near Ypres on or about 30th April 1918 and was sent back to England where he died at Brighton Hospital.

Research this year has identified the likely location of the trench in which he was gassed - the trench runs between the yellow arrows, and is south of Ypres, Belgium

He died on this day and is buried at his home town, Ripon Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Following the research I was fortunate to be able to cycle to the likely location and on my BBBR pilgrimage, this is the cross I laid at the red arrow location, and the tranquil scene that it is now.

Tom and his brother Fred were both in the West Yorks, and their family combined their medals into this display which my father inherited a long time ago.  Fred was awarded the MM and survived the war (his medals are the top row).
